FAQ - 2019 Tournament
How much is it to register?
Registration is set at $210 US Dollars, of which $200 is the entry fee and $10 goes for 2 raffle tickets with a chance to win boules from the champions. REGISTER HERE
Who puts on the tournament?
The Amelia Island Boules Club with the support of United Petanque and the City of Fernandina Beach.
What's the refund policy?
If you cancel on or before Nov 1, 2019 we will refund your registration fee, minus a $15 handling fee.
What if the event is cancelled?
If the tournament is cancelled due to force majeure, we will refund the full registration fee minus a $15 handling fee.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
We prefer that you bring your confirmation number and printed ticket for easy check-in.
Can I register individually if I don't know my teammate?
You will need to provide names for both players in order to register. We are looking at different ways to match partners, email INFO@UNITEDPETANQUE.COM with your needs. Make sure both player emails are included to keep your team up to date.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
The age mimimum is 13, and we welcome multi-generational teams.
How will the prize money be paid?
Prizes will be paid out via a check in US dollars.
Will the schedule change?
The schedule of play on Saturday and Sunday will be as it has been in previous years, Friday activities are now being planned and (we hope) improved!
Do I need a FPUSA or FIPJP license?
No, the tournament is open to all petanque players. But we do go by most of the FPUSA RULES, such as no smoking, drinking, or talking on mobile phones on the courts.
Will you have categories, e.g. beginners, advanced, age groups, men/ladies etc..?
No. This is one big competition. Except for age, it would be impossible or unfair to qualify anyone for any given level category. We also suspect that a disproportionate number would then perhaps sign up as "beginner." One of the beauties of Pétanque is that age and strength are irrelevant. Actually we hope to see several "two generation" teams again. In an effort to mix you all up, we do try to avoid that -on Saturday- you end up playing against folks from your own area. It would be a pity to travel thousands of miles to confront your weekly opponents. In the case of geographically mixed teams, however (e.g. a player from NY + a player from CA) it can happen.
Are we playing on the beach?
No, the beach in Amelia Island is beautiful, but too soft. We're playing at the marina downtown, along the riverfront, as well as at the corner of N 2nd and Broome St. That area is normally covered with rough stone (# 57), which will be scraped up and replaced with a mix of crushed limestone, from fine to 1/4".
What type of boules will be allowed?
You can play with any metal petanque boules, as long as they're within the normal size range (70.5 to 80 mm). Boules will also be available for sale before and during the tournament in case you'd like new ones.
Do I have to be there on Friday afternoon?
The more teams we can check in on Friday, the better. But you can also check in early Saturday morning, before 8:30 AM. If you do not have your confirmation, we can find you by name. So don’t worry.
How about traveling with boules in my carry-on luggage?
Although it helps to put them in a basket (just like a laptop) and point out to the TSA inspector what they are, there is no guarantee they will let them through. Checked luggage is recommended. You can also mail us your set(s) beforehand and travel light. Priority Mail "flat rate" is fast and economical. We will then ship them back to you after the tourney ($13.45).
We have won many tournaments in ........ Can you invite us?
Sorry, but we have no budget for airfares and/or lodging. Top players are more than welcome, but like everyone else they have to get to Amelia Island at their own expense.
What is a "consolante"?
It is customary in petanque tournaments to give teams that get eliminated in the first rounds a second chance. Those teams then move on to a parallel circuit with its own prizes. That way everyone gets to play several games, even on Sunday.
We need a visa to travel to the States. Can you assist us?
Once you have registered, we can send you a letter (at your specific request) confirming that you are registered for the tournament. We do not send invitations. Do bear in mind that the US Consulate in your country will - before anything else - require guarantees that you (a) have the means to cover your stay, and (b) will return home.
